CITY RECREATION

Plainview Offers Recreational Opportunities for All Ages!

Plainview is a small community with lots of opportunities to get involved.  There are two parks where youngsters can play on modern up to date playground equipment and enjoy running around to release their boundless energy.  In Chilvers Park, there are opportunities to play horseshoes, shuffle board and tennis.  The tennis courts were dedicated in honor of Joan Kenney in 2021. Kenney was the first woman inducted into the Nebraska Tennis Hall of Fame and was instrumental in the installation of the tennis courts in Plainview. In 2022, the tennis courts were updated with a new playing surface and courts for pickle ball, basketball and four square. The Plainview swimming pool is also located in the main park right off Highway #20 as you go through the town

The other park aptly named the Band Shell Park after the band shell that was built in the 1930's for Plainview concert goers to enjoy also houses several recreational opportunities.  There is a sand volleyball pit with two courts for summer play while the cement basketball courts are a favorite for many youth and adults alike.  With lighted courts, youth play basketball into the wee hours of the morning during the summer without disturbing anyone.  Also in the Band Shell Park, there is a 9 hole Frisbee golf course that has been recognized in several magazines across the country for it's fun play.  Watch out for hole #4 as you try and maneuver around the pine trees that are obstacles that can challenge any golfer.

Just a short trip west of Plainview you will find the Plainview Country Club, a private 9 hole course with a maturity that attracts golfers from all over the state.  The summer offers leagues for recreational play as well as tournaments to hone your skills against others.  Hole #9 has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the toughest par 3 holes in the country, adding intrigue for all who attempt to play the course.  The clubhouse offers a full bar and is open to the public for functions throughout the season.  Across from the golf course to the north is a camping site that houses a pavilion that can be rented out for gatherings and picnics.  Complete with a lake that is stocked with fish, visitors can play more horseshoes and camp on the grounds with recreational vehicle hook-ups.

North of the Plainview High School are ball fields for those wanting to play softball and baseball.  During the spring and the fall, the outfields are converted over to soccer fields where many youth participate in play against themselves and neighboring towns. From T-Ball to American Legion Baseball, Plainview takes pride in their fields which is why the main field of play for the Legion players is actually called Pride Field.
